Case study: Moving to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques

For Stephanie and Jeff Meyers the decision to move to France was not one that was taken lightly; they first started looking at areas and properties in 2003 and they eventually made an offer on a property in 2005. Fait accompli? Certainly not!

After Jeff took early retirement from British Telecom, the couple contemplated a move away from London, but originally thought to remain in South East England. However, they eventually decided that this would not present enough of a challenge and their dream of living in France slowly turned from being little more than 'a nice idea' to a reality. They decided upon settling in the Pyrénées Atlantiques department in Aquitaine not only because it offers fantastic properties and stunning scenery, but most importantly because the location for them was ideal as it is close to the ski resorts of the Pyrénées and the coastline of the southwestern corner of France. The property the Meyers bought through the VEF Pyrénées Atlantiques office was a habitable property that required a lot of work and TLC, which presented enough of a challenge without being an overwhelming, entire renovation.

However, the main challenge the Meyers faced was the promise to become completely immersed in the local community and, what they truly love – the French way of life. They have remained true to their word. Stephanie is involved in a market garden, situated just opposite their house, helping to pick strawberries and taking them to the local market to sell. She was introduced to this seasonal activity by their neighbours, with whom they have become firm friends. The Meyers regularly attend events in the community and frequent the local hall in an effort to both integrate and improve their French.

Today, the Meyers are both enjoying everything that their new surroundings and lifestyle offers them, whilst continuously challenging themselves to improve their French and become more and more integrated into their new community. Their attitude is born out of a love and respect for their new life in France and all that it offers.

The Meyers bought their property through VEF.
