Retirement in Crete

In Britain, Rob Horwood was a property manager and his wife Jenny was a nurse with a busy GP surgery. When they reached their mid 50s the couple decided that they wanted to retire early.

Retirement in Crete

With their love of Greece, and more specifically Crete, they boldly sold their Lincolnshire house and gave their belongings away to their children. In May 2003 they left England with the firm intention of buying an old property in Crete to renovate. Armed only with their old Renault, a tent and Doris the dog, they drove to Greece and then to Crete. Filled with optimism of what they would find in their soon-to-be home, Rob and Jenny began looking for a property.

The couple travelled around the island looking for a place they could settle in. Their search began on the west side of the island, but neither Rob nor Jenny were keen on that area. Despite their initial failure to find a place they wanted to live in, the Horwoods were far from disheartened. They were both enjoying a great holiday and relishing the opportunity to experience the lifestyle that each potential area offered.

Their travels took them next to Ierapetra on the south-east coast. Here they set up camp and continued their search for an appropriate property. Ierapetra was somewhere that thay felt they could call home, but two sales in the area fell through because on each occasion the vendor could not agree on a price. After this disappointment, Rob and Jenny decided to head up to the north coast of Crete and look for properties around Aghios Nikoloas. It was here that they found their future home through Crete Homes. Going totally against their initial desire for an older property in need of renovation, they fell in love with a relatively new property (1983) in the picturesque village of Kritsa.

Their two-bedroom house has wonderful views and was purchased for 66,000 euros. Although the property was ready for them to move into, Rob has been kept busy painting, modernising and putting up a pergola on their roof terrace. Rob and Jenny quickly settled into village life and have been warmly accepted into the community. In fact, Jenny's cakes are very popular with her neighbours. In between baking, Jenny now works in Crete as a holiday representative and Rob does a few building jobs and some Jeep Safari Tours.
