Where to buy a golf property
Golf resorts are as popular with property investors as they are with golfers, so Patricia Curmi found five of the top places you can tee off as a property owner.
Canada
Timberland, Newfoundland
Now in its second phase release, the Timberland golf resort in the UNESCO listed World Heritage site of the Humber Valley in Newfoundland will consist of 337 luxury executive homes, according to its developers. One of the key attractions of the resort is the 18-hole championship golf course designed by award- winning golf course architect Graham Cooke, which is set in a typically stunning Canadian landscape. Lots at Timberland Golf Resort start from CDN$100,000 (around £49,000) with a range of custom-built homes from CDN$150,000 (around £71,600).

Los Flamingos, Marbella
One of the original golf meccas, Marbella on the Costa del Sol has seen its fair share of golf developments over the years. Alanda Flamingos offers luxury property, including apartments and penthouses, with a design fusion of traditional Mediterranean and contemporary influences. Construction is set for completion at the end of 2006. As an incentive to hold on to your property, Alanda throws in a ten-year membership to Los Flamingos golf club, worth 25,000 euros (£17,000). Prices start at 450,000 euros (£307,000) for two-bedroom first-floor apartment. There are also three-bedroom two-storey penthouses available from just over £1 million euros to (£680,000).

Praia D'El Rey, Obidos
Leading golf magazine Golf World recently ranked this 18-hole course as number 80 in the Top 100 'Courses you must play' and Peugeot Golf Guide voted it the best golf course in Portugal. The golf course is near the beachfront in the less commercialised area of Obidos, an hour from the capital city, Lisbon. Prices start from just £120,000 for a resale property to around £200,000 for a new two-bedroom apartment in Vila da Praia, but expect to shell out a couple of million for a top of the range villa.

Trump International golf club, Canouan Island
Trump International golf club is an 18-hole championship grade golf course designed by Jim Fazio. While international property tycoon Donald Trump, famed for hiring and firing in the US version of The Apprentice, has put his considerable reputation behind the venture, it has already won accolades from South African golfer Ernie Els. In order to purchase real estate in the club, you do need to become a member of The Abaco Club. The refundable initiation deposit for both resident and non-resident membership is around £40,500. Lots range from anywhere between £472,000 to around £1.8 million. There are also turn-key cottages available for purchase for between £945,000 for a two-bedroom cliff cottage and £1.35 million for a four-bedroom Hope cottage.

Spa & Country Club, Dolna Banya
While Bulgaria isn't the first place that springs to mind when talking about golf property, this is slowly changing as the property hunters continue to look eastwards in Europe for bargain properties. The only PGA course in south-east Europe, the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus designed course at Dolna Banya covers over 870,000 square metres in an area that has been rising in buyers' consciousnesses. The development is designed to be an all-year round activity centre with golf for the summer season, extending to skiing during the winter months with direct access to ski lifts. The one and two bedroom Ephrosina apartments close to the course are available from 55,000 euros (£37,500) and 75,000 euros (£51,000) respectively. A Villa 'Christina' with three bedrooms is priced at 140,000 euros (£95,500).
