Morocco: ski property the future?
Ever since King Mohammed VI launched 'Vision 2010', a programme designed to make Morocco one of the world's top tourist destinations, overseas property investors have become increasingly attracted to the country.
The King's £2.2 billion investment in this scheme has been used to upgrade the infrastructure in Morocco and build six brand new seaside resorts, sparking an increase in the number of British property buyers looking to invest in the North African nation - which can be accessed from the UK in 3.5 hours. This property-seeking interest is likely to be further enhanced after it was announced recently that Morocco is being tipped to receive 20 new air routes over the next five years.
However, while much of the existing property interest in Morocco is being paid to the country's seaside resorts, along with Marrakesh and Fez, it could just be that ski property will also soon start to lure investors there.
While Morocco is hardly synonymous with skiing, the Atlas Mountains, located close to Marrakesh, are home to two ski resorts: Oukaimeden and Mischliffen.
Of this duo, Oukaimeden is the one being tipped to become particularly popular: Operational as a ski resort between December and March, Oukaimeden is a pleasant spring and summer destination for much of the rest of the year.
And would-be property investors who are already being drawn towards Morocco may be further tempted by the news that there is plenty of opportunity to invest in real estate in nearby Marrakesh, which is an easy journey to the resort.
Take the Atlas Golf resort currently being marketed by Experience International. As well as including a range of four- and five-star hotels and an 18-hole golf course, this resort also comprises a range of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with prices starting from £64,100.
Also in the city - which has been labelled by some as being Morocco's answer to Dubai - property at the El Oasis de Marrakesh may also be worth a look. With amenities such as a swimming pools, tennis courts, spas and a health centres all on site, spacious apartments on the resort are available through GEM Estates from £80,000.
So, if the thought of owning a property in Morocco does appeal, but the idea of owning a home beside the sea doesn't, it may well be worth keeping an eye on developments close to the Atlas Mountains. Who knows: In a few years time the idea of a ski holiday in Morocco may not sound as ridiculous as it does now.
