Airport construction begins in Murcia

There’s nothing like a new airport for boosting prices – and the Spanish property market is certainly in need of a boost at the moment. That’s why the start of construction to Murcia’s new airport is so well-timed.

Airport construction begins in Murcia

Due for completion in 2010 and excepted to be fully operational by the winter of that year, the new airport will relieve the strain on nearby San Javier Airport, which has seen a steady increase of passengers in recent years. Growth stood at nearly 10 per cent from 2006 to 2007, taking the passenger number from 1,646,129 to 2,002,949.

This increase in the number of people visiting the region indicates an ever-growing popularity and is a positive indicator for the local Spanish property market. Mike Hamilton, MD of local developer Casas de Lorca, comments: "The development of the eagerly anticipated Murcia Airport will be excellent for the region as it will ease passenger numbers at the current airport as well as making travel easier and more convenient for both regular visitors and new passengers utilising the facilities. Murcia continues to grow in popularity as more and more people come to recognise the area's attractive scenery, rich history and good value for money, and the development of Murcia Airport will only add to this trend."

More positive news for Spanish property in the Murcia region comes from a new report by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism's Institute of Tourism Statistics. The report showed that the total spent by international tourists in Murcia in the first four months of 2008 increased by 16 per cent from 2007. When compared to a national increase of just 6.2 per cent over the same period, this is clearly significant.

"I have lived in Murcia for over six years, and over that time I have seen a steady growth in tourist numbers and spending in the province," says Hamilton. "Much of the negative publicity about Spain has been generated by issues in areas to the south and to the noth of Murcia, and has subsequently affected these Spanish property markets – however, Murcia remains popular with British holiday makers and buyers."

Due to the current Spanish property market conditions, a number of developers are offering good deals on property in Murcia. Polaris World are currently marketing free research trips and 200 euro furniture vouchers for their Mar Menor properties, which start at 130,700 euros for a two-bedroom apartment. Casas de Lorca are also offering townhouses in the region from 180,000 euros.
